Sword of the Stranger

Sword of the Stranger is an anime movie from 2007. It has an all to familiar plotline, but it tells the story well and is backed up by some great animation.

A group of Chinese dignitaries and their army is in Japan with the aid of some local warlord. To say they are up to no good is an understatement, and considering the current political relationship between China and Japan the film could have a double meaning.

Anyway, the Chinese are trying to track down a young boy named Kotaro who, along with his dog, is running for his life. Kotaro meets up with a nameless swordsman and former samurai (think Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune) who agrees to help Kotaro reach the safety of a distant monastery -- in exchange for a supposedly valuable treasure. "No Name" even has a haunted past. Even though one can guess much of the rest, it is still an exciting film to watch.

The animation contains some great background artwork, and the fight scenes are very well done. This is a theater feature after all, so all the stops are pulled out -- quite unlike a TV series where shortcuts are taken to save money.

The animation alone is worth seeing. Warning: There is quite a lot of blood in this one. It does have a heartwarming story, but this is not an anime for children. I recommend Sword of the Stranger.
