Voices of a Distant Star: The whole premise of the time dilation & space reminded me of the plot in Gunbuster. A bittersweet tale, very nicely played out, though at only 25 minutes long, it was far too short & didn't really allow the characters to develop.

The Place Promised in Our Early Days: The second of Makoto Shinkai's anime that I got for Chrimbo. The background to the story reminded me of Wings of Honneamise & I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but at the end of it all I felt that something was lacking. Can't put my finger on exactly what was missing though.

Cowboy Bebop Eps 1-26: Prior to getting these boxsets, I had only seen the dubbed version on Toonami(?), stopping at episode 10 when an overzealous online reviewer spoiled the ending for me. -_-;; I really enjoyed the series, especially subbed; even though it's over 8 years old, the animation has stood the test of time IMO, & Yoko Kanno's score shines through. I also recently saw the Knockin' on Heaven's Door movie too, so it was very cool to see Spike & the crew on another adventure.

Kinda disappointed with Mushi-shi.
Monster seems pretty good.
I really have to take my time watching Excel Saga.
It's funny but it makes my face hurt.
Death Note live action movie was cool.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was random and great.

I am surprised more aren't watching this series?

I in particular like Akidzukis sword, the characters within the theatre troupe and the era in which it takes place.

I have to admit though lack of general Japanese history makes it at times a tad confusing, I was a bit worried with all that supernatural nonsense but it turned out for the better.

Question history

Where did you find:
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto

And does it actually cover japanese history pretty well? Or does it start just a few centuries before the Bakumatsu?

Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora Eps 1 & 2: This ranks as the first series ever where I have been following the series from the beginning as the episodes are being screened on Japanese TV, & then subsequently fansubbed, usually within a matter of days (Strawberry Panic! doesn't really count as over 3/4 of that series had been screened before I started following it). I haven't picked out this series on a whim though, like I normally do; ostensibly touted as the "spiritual successor" to Kannazuki no Miko on another board I'm a member of, this is another Kaishaku creation, with the two main leads in KnM making cameo appearances in this new series.
Have to say that so far, this series is rather bland. The character drama is lacking when compared to it's predecessor, & the whole way the series is being played out is very cliche at the moment. There are only two reasons why I am gonna stick with this series;

a). the mecha - I hated the mecha sections in KnM because all the battles were uninspired & formulaic to the point of tedium. Not so in Kyoshiro though; very fresh looking IMO.
b). the cameos of Chikane/Kaon & Himeko/Himiko - it looks like their relationship is as tortured as it was in KnM (I'm a sucker for angsty shoujo-ai relationships). Is it wrong to follow a series purely for the secondary characters?

<hits forehead> Dang, talk about an obvious solution ... I've heard and seen bits on Youtube, but dismissed it as a fad thing ... but it seems to have matured nicely.

Ergo Proxy Eps 5-8 : Even more questions are raised as this series has progressed, but I think I've sussed out the plot to the show now (maybe, heh). I am enjoying this series though, the overall dark & serious tone to the plot has kept me very interested.

Shakugan no Shana Eps 9-12 : I'm not even sure if there is an overall plot to this series as it just seems that Denizens show up, the Flame Hazes kick the crap out of them. I do like this series quite a lot as the characters make me laugh, especially the alcoholic Margery Daw. And the ED theme is awesome.

Looking forward to the next DVD's for both shows. ^_^
