Unhappy Vexille

Vexille is an animated film from 2007. It is also the name of the main character. She's the lone female member of S.W.O.R.D., a paramilitary unit. That alone should give away half the plot.

Anyway, Japan has shut itself off from the rest of the world for the past ten years. This isolation is a result of a dispute with the rest of the world over the development of bio-robotic technology. Oh, and someone wants to take over the world.

The movie starts off with a lot of action, but this is before any plot is established so we really don't know what is going on. After the redundant beginning, if you are still awake, things do get more interesting -- after some dialog trying to set up everything that has and will happen. Actually, it does not get anywhere near interesting until the last half hour of a 105 minute movie.

The animation is all by computer, so this is not a strict anime. Nothing is hand drawn. It looks a bit like a video game at parts. Other times the animation looks almost like live action. Then there are times it is totally flat. Why the inconsistencies? I don't know.

Vexille is not a bad movie, but it is not exactly a ground breaking classic of a thrill ride either. Much of this has been done before and done better. So watch at your own risk.
