Fox Bebop ripoff in production
Guess what folks? The suits at the Fox network have decided to start a new show called 'Firefly' and it sounds vaguely familiar...
(from: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp.../en_tv_eo/9962)
Firefly: Leave it to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV) creator Joss Whedon to return a successful sci-fi series to Friday nights. This one is a cross between Star Trek and old Westerns, starring Nathan Fillion as captain of a team of space "cowboys."
Hmm... Science Fiction mixed with Spaghetti Westerns? Space Cowboys? This sounds somewhat similar to something else I've watched....
Grr... Fox continues to make me angry. Not only do they have the audacity to make a TV that is obviously a ripoff of Bebop, but they have the NERVE to use the same term of SPACE COWBOY!
:grumble grumble:

Like that term is so orginal? I'm actualy currious about this show. It's LIVE action, not an anime...it would be interesting to see how the effects are and how it stands up. It the same director as Buffy the Vampire Slayer...while I like Buffy, its hard for me to imagine a sci fi show from that director.
I'm actualy a fan of Fox, its one of the better Network stations out there, 70's show, Cops, X-files, Dark Angel...Fox, Sci-Fi, Comedy Central, and Cartoon Network are about the only stations I flip to when I watch TV.

Hmmmm... it may or may not be a rip off.
If you think about it, maybe they are drawing from the same sources for inspiration. You never know... //shrugs//

Somebody bring this to the attention of Bandai and Sunrise. If the rest of the plot stuff is too closely-related to Bebop, it could be considered plaugrism, or infringement, or whatever you want to call it...

There is hardly enough information to justify this as a "ripoff." Describing something as "sci-fi, old Westerns, space cowboys, and Star Trek" could be any number of things unlike Bebop. While Bebop had many of those elements, it also didn't stick to one way of storytelling, didn't follow a particular genre overall, was very episodic, was obviously aimed at a more mature audience, and had an electrifying soundtrack. There's more to the anime than cowboys, bounties, and science fiction.

Maybe it wil be a decent show, or maybe it will be a piece of crap -- that's besides the point. The real issue here is did Fox really "rip off" Bebop?
If you think it over, there are very few original ideas in the first place, and the term "space cowboy" I have actually heard used before to refer to a 1950's tv show by an elderly gentleman. So apparently the term is not exculsively Bebop and has been used pre-CB. If I can, I'll try to track down something more concrete to back it up.
Second of all, is it necessarily a bad thing that the writers are possibly influenced by anime?
Finally, ditto to what Drizzten said.

Let me remind you all that Bebop is hardly the most original show in the world.

tsk, space cowboy wasnt invented by bebop. i think theres a movie called space cowboys as well. anyway, i doubt it if it rips off bebop, and besides, its not like bebop hasnt been ripped off before, i can name 2 other animes that has a lot of elements of bebop in my head.

Watanabe should sue, because Cowboy Bebop obviously holds all rights to the phrase 'Space Cowboy'. Really.
